This chapter explores the process of language acquisition and understanding how languages are learned. Session 1 critically examines the traditional focus on grammar and vocabulary and its impact on learning outcomes for beginners. Session 2 introduces different methodologies for language learning at various proficiency levels, with a specific emphasis on a story-based approach and comprehensible input.

In this chapter, the focus is on leveraging stories for teaching complete beginners. Session 1 introduces the concept of the “super 7” phrases and Total Physical Response (TPR) as essential elements for low-level communication. Session 2 delves deeper into using TPR and elicitation questions to reinforce patterns, generate interest, allow time for processing, and advance the story content. Sessions 3 to 6 cover topics such as incorporating phonics, utilizing stories for developing all four skills, and guiding learners in creating and sharing their personal stories.

This chapter explores how stories can be used to enhance syntactical control and vocabulary development. Session 1 focuses on expanding stories and storytelling by incorporating high-frequency structures. Session 2 delves into the concept of chunking words together to promote fluency development and vocabulary learning. Session 3 discusses the effectiveness of three-part stories and provides strategies to move beyond them when the story leads to further exploration. Sessions 4 and 5 delve into incorporating vocabulary development through student-generated stories and engaging vocabulary games and activities. Session 6 provides opportunities for general practice and review activities related to stories and story-based teaching.

In this chapter, the emphasis is on developing the four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Session 1 explores techniques for teaching speaking to beginners, including incorporating speaking practice into stories to develop fluency. Session 2 focuses on teaching listening skills through stories, covering both transactional and interactional listening. Session 3 delves into teaching reading to beginners, and Session 4 addresses strategies for teaching writing. Session 5 highlights the importance of pronunciation activities to support all four skills. Session 6 centers around assessing learners in a story-based approach.

The final chapter focuses on putting the acquired knowledge into practice. It consists of assessed lesson reflections spread over ten sessions, enabling participants to reflect on their own classes or observe other teachers using the activities. Additionally, there are two tutor-led observation sessions that provide personalized feedback. These sessions create opportunities for sharing best practices, addressing concerns, and answering questions, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of how to effectively implement storytelling in language teaching.
