During our visit, we had the opportunity to interact with three different groups of children, engaging in hour-long activities with each class. To kick things off, we read a captivating picture book in both Arabic and English. This approach aimed to introduce the children to a new foreign language. It’s worth noting that these children grow up bilingual, as they speak Arabic at home and Turkish in their daily lives. Learning English holds great importance, as it not only connects them to the wider world but also serves as a valuable skill for refugee children, potentially shaping their future opportunities.
The picture book we shared focused on the theme of colors, allowing us to explore how to express different colors in both Arabic and English. Following this, each child embarked on a colorful adventure by creating their own parrot, inspired by the book’s main character. Drawing is a perfect medium for children, especially those who are still learning to write words. It enables them to convey their emotions, fears, happiness, and serves as a therapeutic outlet.
To conclude our visit, we all joined in singing the beloved children’s song, “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.” This catchy and easily learned English tune not only added a delightful touch to the atmosphere but also got everyone moving and engaged.
As a small gesture of appreciation and encouragement, every child at the “Safa and Marwa Kindergarten” received a pencil and an eraser from SSSP. This initial visit left a heartwarming impression on us, and we look forward to returning in the near future to continue spreading joy among these young learners.”
