What is Palmyra Neighborhood School in the al-Rukban camp?

👉The Palmyra Neighborhood School (PNS) is one of the eight schools located within the al-Rukban camp, a besieged and isolated camp for Syrian IDPs. PNS caters to 133 children from grades 1 to 6, with five teachers and one guard. Before SSSP’s support, the school received irregular financial aid. Since May 2023, SSSP has sponsored a monthly fee of $150 for all students and a monthly salary of $50 for each teacher and guard. The total monthly budget for PNS is $500.

When was SSSP launched, and what has it achieved so far?

👉SSSP was launched in May 2023. Within just two months, it successfully raised a one-year budget to support two small schools. The first school is called “Grandpa’s Classroom” and is located in Idlib, Syria. The second school is the “Palmyra Neighborhood School” (PNS) situated in the al-Rukban camp for Syrian Internally Displaced People (IDPs).

What is the Small School Support Project (SSSP)?

👉The Small School Support Project (SSSP) is an initiative started by Lara Tseng. Its purpose is to provide financial and material support to small-scale schools or classrooms worldwide, particularly those catering to refugees. The project aims to ensure that these schools can continue providing education to children.

Can you provide more information about Grandpa's Classroom

👉Grandpa’s Classroom is a school in Idlib, Syria, run by a retired high school sports teacher. It operates in his own living room and provides education in Arabic writing, reading, and Quran memorization to approximately 150 children. The monthly budget for Grandpa’s Classroom is $200, which covers expenses such as rent, water, electricity, work papers, and outdoor sports activities.

Has SSSP made any improvements to the Palmyra Neighborhood School?

👉Yes, in July 2023, at the request of the former principal, Lara personally sponsored the renovation of Palmyra Neighborhood School with a fee of $3500. The funds were used to make the campus safer and brighter, including raising the walls by one meter, fixing the leaking roof, and painting the walls with colorful drawings. The students returned to a transformed campus after a short summer break.

What additional support does the Palmyra Neighborhood School need?

👉While basic needs are covered, PNS still requires tables, chairs, and necessary stationery items such as backpacks, pencils, notebooks, and erasers. To address this, SSSP initiated a charity Zumba party in collaboration with Zumba Factory to raise funds for the purchase of educational supplies for the 133 children of PNS.

Are there any ongoing campaigns or initiatives by SSSP?

👉Yes, in August and September 2023, SSSP launched the “A Birthday Gift to Yoyo” campaign in collaboration with a Taiwanese influencer. The campaign aims to raise funds for partial salaries of 15 teachers at the Spring Song School, another school in the al-Rukban camp. The goal is to provide ongoing support to the teachers with a monthly salary of $50 per teacher.

How can I support the Small School Support Project (SSSP)?

👉SSSP welcomes personal or entrepreneurial sponsors to support their projects. The priority is given to the “adaptation of school” step, but all sponsorships, regardless of the amount, are welcome. You can connect with SSSP through their Facebook page, Instagram account, or website for more information on how to contribute.
